Flight Cancellation Rights, Explained Without the Legalese

What you are actually owed when an airline cancels — refund, rebook, hotel, meals — and how to claim it fast.

When an airline cancels your flight, your rights depend on three things: where you're flying from, the airline's country, and the reason for cancellation.

United States (DOT rules): if the airline cancels, you're entitled to a full cash refund (not just a voucher), even on non-refundable tickets. Many carriers will quietly default to a voucher unless you specifically ask for cash.

European Union (EC 261): for flights departing the EU or operated by an EU carrier, cancellations within 14 days of departure trigger compensation of €250–€600 per passenger, plus a refund or rebooking. Weather and air-traffic control delays are excluded.

UK & Canada: similar consumer-friendly frameworks (UK261 mirrors EC261; APPR in Canada).

Documentation matters. Save your cancellation email, boarding pass, and any out-of-pocket receipts. When in doubt, call us — we file the claim on your behalf and chase the refund.
