Private fares are negotiated rates between airlines and select travel agencies. They never appear on public engines like Google Flights or Expedia.
Why do airlines do it? Volume guarantees, off-peak inventory clearance, distribution agreements, and corporate contracts. The agency commits to selling N tickets a quarter; in exchange they get fares 10–40% below the public price.
Consolidator fares are a sister category — airlines unload long-haul international seats in bulk and consolidators retail them at deep discounts. These are the rates most American travellers see only when they call a specialist.
The catch: private and consolidator fares come with their own fare rules. Sometimes more flexible than public fares; sometimes less. A good travel agent walks you through the rules before you pay.
If your trip is more than $500 and more than 3,000 miles, it almost always pays to get a second quote from a specialist before booking online.
